Family photography may be my passion, but if I’m totally honest, my first love was ballet. So when I was asked by Joanne Ward Dance Academy in Hersham to put on my hat as a dance photographer in Surrey, I was delighted.

Miss Jo asked me to photograph their young dancers at their bi-annual dance show. With my love for dance, I of course jumped at the opportunity. In fact I think I pirouetted towards the door, I was so excited!

This photo shoot certainly didn’t disappoint my passion for dance. Both the children and adults at Joanne Ward Dance Academy were clearly having great fun. They really enjoyed taking a break from their dress rehearsal to pose for some studio style individual and group photographs.

My own background in dance was really helpful in arranging the poses and guiding the dancers. I was able to suggest age and skill appropriate positions for each photograph. I was also able to correct technique if needed, so that everyone was looking their best. This took the pressure off the teachers, who could focus on the rehearsals!

I also photographed one of the performances to provide some live-action memories for parents and teachers alike. Both the studio-style and live photographs were really popular with parents, and also look great on the Joanne Ward Dance Academy website.

As well as photographing dance schools, I also love to photograph individual dancers outside of the school environment. This allows for a more creative approach and more unique images. I love combining my passion for dance, dance photography, and stunning location photography by taking dancers to beautiful outdoor locations for photographs that won’t disappoint!
