Preparing for your mini photography session in the lavender fields

PREPARING FOR YOUR MINI PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION IN THE LAVENDER FIELDS

I’m really looking forward to meeting you and your family for our upcoming photography session at Mayfield Lavender farm! Below you will find some useful information on how to prepare and what to expect on the day. If you have any questions, please contact me any time.

What to expect

  • Our mini photography session will last 25 minutes.
  • I will take a variety of photographs – individuals, pairings and family groups. If you’ve got something specific in mind, please do let me know!
  • I will guide you through the session to help you feel relaxed – most of my images with children are based on fun and games to keep everyone relaxed and capture natural expressions.
  • The session will revolve entirely around the children, please try to ensure they are well rested and fed.
  • Worried that your children won’t behave? Please don’t! I am experienced in working with children of all ages and know how to get the best from them.
  • It is not necessary to coach or bribe your children to smile or look at the camera – I’m looking for natural expressions and will interact directly with your children to get the best from them.
  • I might ask for your assistance in capturing the attention of younger children, but I may also ask you to step away and let me focus on engaging directly with little ones (or older ones!). Please don’t be offended if I do this and just use it as an opportunity to relax!
  • For sessions with babies or young children, please bring wet wipes, spare clothes and nappies, and a favourite toy.

Mayfield Lavender Farm

1 Carshalton Rd
Banstead
SM7 3JA

There is a car park located directly next to the lavender field. Please give me a call on 07855 366 494 around five minutes before our session time, to help us locate each other!

Please do your best to be on time, as due to the nature of mini sessions I have several clients scheduled one after the other. I recommend allowing plenty of time for your journey and to enter the farm.

Mayfield Lavender also has a shop in a different location, please ensure you don’t get the two confused! There is an entry fee of £5 per person over 12 years, payable on entrance (card is accepted).

I will be in touch in the days before our photography session to confirm that the weather forecast is suitable for us to proceed. If it is wet I may reschedule to an alternative time, please keep the full day free. If your session is booked for Saturday 15th July and the full day is wet, I will try to reschedule to Sunday 16th July.

What to wear

Clothing choices are a very important part of preparing for your photography session. There are a few simple tips that you can follow to help maximise the impact of your finished images, and if you get stuck, feel free to chat to me, or look on my blog for inspiration.

Choose a colour theme

The aim is for your family to look coordinated, but not matching. By choosing 2-3 colours for your family to wear, each family member will look different, but you will avoid looking too ‘busy’ (clashing colours, too many colours), or looking like one colour block (too much of the same colour).

Colours which look beautiful in the lavender fields are cream, grey, blue, pale pink and bright yellow! I recommend avoiding black. You can browse the photographs on this link to get some inspiration from other families that I’ve photographed in the lavender.

Add some interest

Layering your clothing is also a great way to add interest and allow us to change your look between shoots by adding or removing layers.

Stripes? Checks? Flowers? Polka Dots? I love them all! But please steer clear of large logos and dominant text which could detract attention from the subject in the final images.

Be comfortable

If you feel good in your clothes, it will help you to relax and have fun during our session.

Your images

Your photographs will be ready to view in an online gallery, approximately 3 weeks after our photo shoot. You may choose 4 images to receive as digital files. The remaining images in your gallery can be purchased as digital files for an additional £99. I also sell framed wall art and will provide examples of these products after your photo shoot.

Your gallery will be live for 7 days for you to make your selections.

Questions?

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me anytime.

See you soon!

Preparing for your newborn photography session

Preparing for your Newborn Photography Session

Thank you for choosing Katie Lister Photography! This page will guide you through how best to prepare for our newborn photography session, including what to expect, clothing choices, how the session will run, and choosing your final images.

I’ve incorporated my experience at being both behind the camera, and in front of the camera for my own photography sessions, to help you get the most out of yours. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.

I look forward to meeting you and your family soon!

What to Expect

  • My newborn photography sessions take place in the early weeks after you baby arrives. There is no age limit on when I can photograph a newborn. Every week is a special one and it does not matter if your baby is one week old or 20 weeks old!
  • Our session will be very relaxed and documentary style, so it is not essential that your baby is asleep all the time.  I will guide you through the session to help you feel at ease.
  • The session can last 2-3 hours, as we take plenty of breaks for feeds and changes whenever needed.
  • I will take a wide variety of photographs – just baby, pairings and family groups. If you’ve got something specific in mind, please do let me know!
  • Please don’t schedule other visitors to arrive on the day of, or during our photography session. Having a newborn baby is exhausting, if this isn’t your first you’ll know this all too well! Having photographs taken will likely be tiring enough for you and baby, without additional visitors to deal with.
  • Worried that your older children won’t behave? Please don’t! I am experienced in working with children of all ages and know how to get the best from them. I can coax even the most reluctant of children into having fun.
  • It is not necessary to coach or bribe your older children to smile or look at the camera – I’m looking for natural expressions and will interact directly with your children to get the best from them. I might ask for your assistance in capturing the attention of younger children, but I may also ask you to step away and let me focus on engaging directly with little ones (or older ones!). Please don’t be offended if I do this and just use it as an opportunity to relax!

Taking photographs at home

  • I favour shooting in rooms with plenty of natural light, so would welcome to chance to look around your home and choose which areas will work best. I can supplement natural light with flash if and where required.
  • Light permitting, my favourite places to photograph your family are the lounge, master bedroom and children’s bedrooms. Tidying and decluttering these areas will help me, but I’m prepared to do this when I arrive and am known for shifting things around to get the right shot!
  • Please advise me before our session if you have parking or access restrictions in your area.

What to wear

Clothing choices are an important part of preparing for your photography session. There are a few simple tips that you can follow to help maximise the impact of your finished images, and if you get stuck, feel free to chat to me, or look on my blog for inspiration.

  • For baby, I recommend keeping clothing really simple – plain babygros or vests which fit as snugly as possible look best on tiny babies. If you’re purchasing something specifically for our session, buy a size which just fits now, rather than one for baby to grow into. This will avoid your baby looking swamped!
  • I love to use your own blankets, muslins or special items to personalise your images. Please have these to hand!

Choose three complementary colours

  • The aim is for your family to look coordinated, but not matching. By sticking to three complementary colours, each family member will look different, but you will avoid looking too ‘busy’ (clashing colours, too many colours), or looking like one colour block (too much of the same colour). For example, choose blues, pinks or pale greens with beige or grey and a dash of white.
  • Neutral or pale colour tones look really great in newborn photographs as it creates a soft colour pallette.
  • Black clothing is best avoided.

Add some interest

  • Layering your clothing is also a great way to add interest and allow us to change your look between shots by adding or removing layers
  • Stripes? Checks? Flowers? Polka Dots? I love them all! But please steer clear of large logos and dominant text which could detract attention from the subject in the final images.

Be comfortable

  • If you feel good in your clothes, it will help you to relax and have fun during our session.
  • The same goes for your little ones – when dressing babies please keep clothing fuss-free.

When I had my own newborn photography session, I splashed out on a new dress because hardly any of my existing clothes fitted in the early weeks post-baby. I also booked a blow-dry for my hair. Not only did those little things help me look nice, but it made me feel confident and happy. It’s a small cost in the grand scheme of what I invest in family photography. This isn’t essential of course, but if there’s somthing that helps you feel great, treat yourself!

After our session

  • You will receive a link to a password-protected gallery of 30-40 images within 2 weeks of our session. The gallery is open for two weeks for you to place your order of digital files, frames and/or prints.
  • I am always on hand via email or phone, or in person if you prefer, to help you choose your favourites. Your gallery link can be shared with friends and family if you wish.
  • Delivery of your final products will take place as soon as possible after your payment is received. Exact timings will depend on what you order.
  • You will have read my full price list before you booked, but here’s a link again.

Katie Lister USB

Please remember that I am a mother too, and totally understand what life is like with a newborn. If you manage none of the above, don’t worry… we will still capture beautiful images of your little one!

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me at any time. I look forward to meeting you and your family soon!

what is a photoshoot like

Taking photographs at home

If we plan to spend all or part of our photography session at your home, then the following information will help you to prepare:

  • I favour shooting in rooms with plenty of natural light, so would welcome to chance to look around your home and choose which areas will work best. I can supplement natural light with flash if and where required.
  • Light permitting, my favourite places to photograph your family are the lounge, master bedroom and children’s bedrooms. Tidying and decluttering these areas will help me, but I’m prepared to do this when I arrive and am known for shifting things around to get the right shot!
  • Please advise me before our session if you have parking or access restrictions in your area.

Taking photographs on location

  • If we are holding our photography session entirely on location, then I will agree with you beforehand exactly where we will meet (public spaces can be be vast!), and you will easily spot me as the person carrying the large camera!
  • We will take photographs in various different spots within our chosen location.
  • Outside photography sessions will proceed unless the weather forecast is for prolonged rain or high winds. Light showers can usually be dodged. Whilst we agree a time for our photography session, I ask that you please keep the rest of the day clear of fixed committments where possible, in case the weather forecast requires us to move the timing of our photography session earlier or later.
  • If the weather does not permit us to shoot outside, I will reschedule our session at no additional cost. I always reconfirm location sessions on the day itself, due to weather limitations.

What to wear

Clothing choices are a very important part of preparing for your photography session. There are a few simple tips that you can follow to help maximise the impact of your finished images, and if you get stuck, feel free to chat to me, or look on my blog for inspiration.

Choose complementary colours

  • The aim is for your family to look coordinated, but not matching. By sticking to 3/4/5 complementary colours (depending on the size of your group), each family member will look different, but you will avoid looking too ‘busy’ (clashing colours, too many colours), or looking like one colour block (too much of the same colour). For example, choose blues, pinks or pale greens with beige or grey and a dash of white.
  • All black or all white clothing is best avoided.

  • If we are shooting in a casual setting such as the beach or park, then try to keep your clothing casual too.
  • The same goes for your little ones – when dressing babies please keep clothing fuss-free. If we are at home or the outside temperature allows, I thoroughly recommend just a vest or babygro for the tiniest family members.

When I’m in front of the camera for my own family photoshoots, I always splurge on a blow-dry for my hair. Not only does it make me look nice, but it makes me feel confident and happy. It’s a small cost in the grand scheme of what I invest in family photography. This isn’t essential of course, but if there’s somthing that helps you feel great, treat yourself!

Here are some examples of families that I’ve met with great clothing colours and combinations:

Kind Words

Kind Words

I always ask my clients for feedback on their experience of our photography session, and on their final images. It helps me to improve my work, and also helps prospective clients to decide if I’m the right photographer for their family. Below are a few of the comments I’ve received from recent clients, and you can also read different reviews on my Facebook page.

Right from the first minute Katie had everyone at ease and we now have the most fantastic set of photos. They are all so natural and informal and capture expressions perfectly. She had our children eating out of her hand!! I can’t recommend Katie highly enough, we are already looking forward to her next session.[Victoria]

I was very excited when Katie arrived for a photo session with our little girl and even more excited when I saw the end result – Katie was so organised and calm and as a result we have some beautiful pictures, not only of Holly but of us as a family – we could not be happier and found it very difficult to pick our favourite pictures to enlarge – thank you Katie. [Kellie]

Little Sophie is normally shy in front of the cameras, but this was not the case for Katie’s. She was so warm and fun, which meant she broke the ice in no time. It was great to see Sophie presented her natural self which was captivatingly captured by a dedicated Katie. Big thanks again for such a joyous and memorable experience to the whole family. [Van]

Katie came to our house to photograph our 3 boys, including the new addition to our family. She engaged with the older boys (8 and 5 years old) to involve them in the photo shoot to ensure it was a fun and enjoyable experience. Katie also took some newborn photos of our little boy who was 4 weeks old. She was excellent with our baby boy and was very good at helping to settle and calm him. She was very gentle and a real natural when working with our baby. Katie interacted with the whole family in a very relaxed and professional manner. We were thrilled with the photos Katie took – they captured the spirit of our family. [Alison]

Our photo session with Katie was a truly special and beautiful experience. We were nine people – seven adults and two children aged 4 and 2 yrs. Katie helped us feel very relaxed and happy – this was no easy task as the little ones weren’t very co-operative to start, yet Katie’s warm and kind disposition, and her amazing patience and understanding turned what could have been a disaster into the most incredible photo session. Looking at these pictures is testament to the gifted talent Katie has as a photographer. When choosing our photos, Katie’s patience, and respect for others is another great gift she is blessed with. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Katie. One would have beautiful memories beyond what you could imagine. [Charlene]

I just wanted to say a huge thank you… The girls could handle being photographed by you at any time, you really put them at ease. They loved it! We really enjoyed the day and think you captured us as a family at home which is just how we wanted it. Thanks again we appreciate it. [Olivia]

To take photos of young children and babies, you must need the patience of a saint – and you have it in abundance. What’s more, your relaxed, warm and friendly way put us all at ease and you captured some stunning shots of our baby daughter, Amelie, at the tender age of just nine weeks. Thank you for taking nappy changes, feeds and baby outbursts all in your stride, ensuring that our photoshoot was stress-free and really enjoyable. Frequently Asked Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

This page is designed to give you some more information about how I run my photography sessions so that you can be well prepared and relaxed on the day itself. Please note if our session involves a newborn baby I will contact you separately with additional information.

How will the session run?

Our photography session will run for between 1 and 2 hours. When we meet I’ll introduce myself and give you some information about the plan for the session, as well as confirm what you are looking for from your finished images. Then, we’ll get started! We typically shoot in a few different spots within our chosen location, and I’ll take a mixture of posed and un-posed photographs. For sessions involving babies or younger children, we’ll take breaks where necessary. To make the most of our session, please make sure your children are well fed and rested before we start. I aim to plan our sessions around both available light, and children’s nap times. It is not necessary to coach or bribe your children to smile or look at the camera – I’m looking for natural expressions and will interact directly with your children to get the best from them. I might ask for your assistance in capturing the attention of younger children, but I may also ask you to step away and let me focus on engaging directly with little ones (or older ones!). Please don’t be offended if I do this and just use it as an opportunity to relax!

Outside photography sessions will proceed unless the weather forecast is for prolonged rain or high winds. Light showers can usually be dodged. Whilst we agree a time for our photography session, I ask that you please keep the rest of the day clear of fixed commitments where possible, in case the weather forecast requires us to move the timing of our photography session earlier or later.

What should we wear?

Clothing choices are a very important (and fun!) part of preparing for your photography session. There are a few simple rules that you can follow to help maximise the impact of your finished images, and if you get stuck, feel free to chat to me, or look on my blog for inspiration. Four simple rules:

1. Choose three complementary colours

The aim is for your family to look coordinated, but not matching. By sticking to three complementary colours, each family member will look different, but you will avoid looking too ‘busy’ (clashing colours, too many colours), or looking like one colour block (too much of the same colour). All black or all white clothing is best avoided, and some ideas for different seasons / locations are: The Beach – Pastels look gorgeous in this dreamy setting: team your choice of blues, pinks or pale greens with beige or grey and a dash of white. If you want a pattern in there, stripes are perfect for the beach. The Park in Spring/Summer – chose bold, bright colours (except for green, because you don’t want to blend into the background!) and keep it casual for this informal setting. Patterns and textures look great. The Park in Autumn/Winter – rich colours, yellows and oranges will reflect the natural environment of the season. Team with jeans and beige accessories to achieve a muted, earth-toned look. If it’s cold outside, then accessorising with colour coordinated hats/scarves/gloves is great for some added detail! Your home – is there a dominant colour in your home that you’d like your wall portraits to reflect? If so, consider how your clothing choices could mirror this colour.

2. Find one key piece and work around it

Do you have a favourite t-shirt for your son? Or a beautiful floral dress that your daughter loves? Selecting one key piece can be a great start to putting together outfits for the whole family. For example, if your daughter’s dress is white with blue and green flowers, chose khaki pants a white shirt for your dad, and blue jeans, with t-shirt and pale green cardigan for mum.

3. Embrace patterns but avoid logos and text

Stripes? Checks? Flowers? Polka Dots? I love them all! But steer clear of large logos and dominant text which could detract attention from the subject in the final images.

4. Pick clothing that you love and feel great in!

The same goes for your little ones – dressing a 4 month old up like a 4 year old probably isn’t going to be comfortable and the chances are this is going to convey in the finished images. If anyone is scratchy or constrained it is likely to show! Keep everyone comfy for a happy session.

What should I bring for my baby or toddler?

If your little one is still very little, I recommend that you bring a bag of supplies to our photography session. In your magic bag of goodies it’s a great idea to pack:

  • Wet wipes and muslin
  • A spare set of clothes for baby and for you (accidents happen!)
  • Nappy changing gear
  • A few favourite toys
  • Milk/water / clean snacks (What is a clean snack I hear you ask?! Crackers, biscuits, raisins etc – rather than fresh fruit, juice which is more likely to mark clothing when spilled)

Do you have a studio?

All of my photography sessions are conducted on location at your home or in a public space such as a park or the beach. I also have use of beautiful private woodland in Hersham, Surrey. By shooting on location I can ensure that your images are truly unique and customised to your family.

When will we see our images?

A full gallery will be usually available for your private viewing within 2 weeks.

Some of your portfolio images are shot at the beach – but you are located in Surrey.. do you offer beach sessions?

I’m based in Surrey and conduct most of my photography sessions in the local area. I have limited availability for beach / park / home photography sessions in Poole, Dorset each year. Please contact me using the link in the menu above if you are interested in a Poole session this year.   If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me for more information.

About Katie

Meet Katie

Surrey baby photographer katie lister
katie lister photographer

Hello!

My name is Katie, and I love photographing people. I’m a Walton on Thames photographer.

My passion for people photography came from seeing the emotional impact my photographs have on the families that I meet. Often speechless, sometimes tearful, and always overjoyed – making this positive impact on the lives of others through photography is the core of my inspiration.

I give 110% to every single photography session. I work hard so that you don’t need to. Your family photographs will look effortless, adorn your walls with pride, and fill your heart with joy.

I live with my husband and two young children in Walton on Thames, and unsurprisingly I photograph them all the time! I spend my days with my children, slotting in ‘work’ around their schedules. I sometimes struggle to call it ‘work’ because photography is also a passion and running my business gives me a huge sense of pride and achievement.

In a former life I was a chartered accountant, and when I’m not holding my camera I’m helping other photographers navigate the world of finance for small businesses.

I am passionate about colour in my photography and find joy in capturing the uniqueness of each season. Please join me in a journey of colour around the sun, and let me capture your family in all it’s glory.

If you’re interested in learning more about a photography session with me, then please check out what my existing clients have to say about me, or simply get in touch with questions or a booking request.
