Photographing a ballerina and a musician

December 05, 2017

Photographing sisters is always a special experience, but when one is a tiny ballerina and the other a talented musician, it takes me to another level of excitement! Planning this autumn photography session was a great exercise for my artistic creativity, with mum happy for me to take full creative control of her two beautiful girls, a stunning tutu and a tuneful guitar.

We started by capturing some sibling photographs in the autumn leaves, giving everyone a chance to get to know me, warm up to the camera and have some fun. Then after a quick change and a change of hairstyle, the performing really began!

I was a keen ballet dancer myself as a youngster, so posing and directing this tiny ballerina felt natural and rather nostalgic for me. We played music, she danced and skipped, and I captured a mixture of whimsical, carefree photographs and more formal, balletic portraits.

Using a much-loved musical instrument as a prop gave a purpose and direction to teen photography, as well as providing a very pleasing soundtrack!

At the end we had great fun blowing and throwing glitter for something a bit different, and the result was a really varied gallery of photographs for the family.
